Checking WebRTC support...

What is WebRTC?

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is a technology built into modern web browsers that enables direct communication between devices without needing a server as an intermediary.

InstDrop uses WebRTC for:

  • Direct file transfer – data flows directly between your devices
  • End-to-end encryption – WebRTC automatically encrypts all data (DTLS-SRTP)
  • Low latency – transfer takes the shortest possible path

Supported Browsers

WebRTC is supported in all modern browsers. Here's an overview of minimum versions:

Desktop Browsers

  • Chrome version 56+ (2017)
  • Firefox version 44+ (2016)
  • Safari version 11+ (2017)
  • Edge version 79+ (2020)
  • Opera version 43+ (2017)

Mobile Browsers

  • Chrome Android version 56+ (2017)
  • Safari iOS version 11+ (2017)
  • Firefox Android version 44+ (2016)
  • Samsung Internet version 6+ (2017)

Unsupported Browsers

  • • Internet Explorer (all versions)
  • • Legacy Edge (before version 79, pre-Chromium)
  • • Browsers without JavaScript support
  • • Some in-app browsers embedded in applications

WebRTC Security Features

Automatic encryption: WebRTC uses DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security) to encrypt all transmitted data. This encryption is mandatory and cannot be disabled.
Identity verification: Each WebRTC connection uses certificates to verify that you're communicating with the intended device.
Sandbox environment: WebRTC runs in the browser's sandbox, so it has no access to your files or system without your permission.

Troubleshooting

WebRTC is blocked

Some browser extensions or VPNs may block WebRTC. Try:

  • • Temporarily disable your VPN
  • • Check extensions like "WebRTC Leak Shield" or similar
  • • Open the page in an incognito/private window

Firewall blocking connection

Corporate networks may block WebRTC traffic. Solutions:

  • • Try connecting via mobile data
  • • Use "Offline P2P" mode for local network transfers
  • • Contact IT department about allowing WebRTC

Outdated browser

If you're using an older browser, we recommend updating to the latest version. All modern browsers are free and update automatically.
